Technical SEO Checklist for 2026

8 min read

Technical SEO is the foundation for everything else. Use this checklist to find the problems most likely to be limiting your site.

Crawlability

Check that your robots.txt is not blocking important sections, your XML sitemap lists only indexable URLs and key pages are reachable through internal links within a few clicks.

Indexation

Compare the pages you want indexed with what Google reports in Search Console. Look for duplicate content, wrong canonical tags and accidental noindex directives.

Site architecture and URLs

Keep a logical hierarchy, short descriptive URLs and consistent use of trailing slashes. Avoid chains of redirects and orphan pages with no internal links.

Core Web Vitals

Aim for a Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less, an Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less and a Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less. Optimize images, reduce blocking scripts and reserve space for media.

Structured data and mobile

Add accurate Schema.org markup for the content you actually have, validate it, and confirm every template works well on mobile devices.

Security and monitoring

Serve everything over HTTPS, fix mixed content and set up regular crawls so new problems are caught early.
